This concert, featuring Melbourne’s Cedar Collective, is the fourth in the String Quartet #1 Project which aims to showcase first string quartets from Australian composers.
This instalment in the series will explore the multitudinous connotations in the music of Tasmanian convict composer Alexander Laing (1792-1868), with performances of Laing’s fiddle tunes interlaced between each contemporary string quartet. Composed while Laing was constable in the township of Sorell, these tunes are amongst the first notated compositions written in Tasmania, and by pairing them with new string quartet compositions from living Australian composers, the String Quartet #1 Project | Series 4 will explore a dialogue between past and present music.
