Presented within the historic sandstone walls of Salamanca Arts Centre, Continuum brings together a comprehensive selection of John Wren’s work, spanning from his earliest explorations to his most recent and resolved paintings.

–––––

The exhibition traces the arc of a sustained creative life, revealing shifts in technique, scale, subject and confidence that define the development of a rigorous artistic practice. Early works expose a raw instinct; bold gestures, restless surfaces, and an urgency to understand material. As the work unfolds, mark-making becomes more deliberate, compositions more assured, and a distinct visual language begins to emerge.

Operating slightly outside the traditional art world, Wren has developed his practice with a high degree of independence, free from rigid expectations, and guided instead by instinct, discipline, and an ongoing commitment to exploration. Rather than presenting a singular style, Continuum embraces multiplicity. It reveals an artist unafraid of change; one who revisits, reworks and reimagines. Structure and abstraction exist in constant dialogue, each informing and challenging the other, creating a dynamic tension that underpins the work.

Set within a space steeped in Tasmanian cultural history, the exhibition becomes a quiet conversation between past and present. The enduring architecture mirrors the artist’s own trajectory, marked by persistence, transformation, and time.

Continuum invites viewers to move through the gallery chronologically or intuitively, encountering not only resolved works, but the thinking and evolution behind them. Both retrospective and renewal, it offers a moment to pause, reflect, and recognise the cumulative force of a practice in constant motion.
