Muntrikawripa – Takayna is a celebration of a remote and ancient landscape, situated in the northwest of Tasmania, that holds immense cultural and ecological significance. Through media and written word, this exhibition seeks to honour the enduring connection between Palawa people and their Country and amplify the call for its protection.

Takayna and particularly the coastal region of Muntrikawripa has 40,000 years of Palawa culture deeply embedded in its dunes, waterways, and forests – yet it remains under threat from current and future mining, forestry and recreational four-wheel drive practices. Through photography, video, and the written word, this exhibition seeks to honour the enduring connection between the Palawa people and their Country and amplify the call for its protection.

Artists Andrew Phipps, Paul Hoelen, and Luke Tscharke, alongside Palawa cultural advisor and elder Theresa Sainty, have walked this country, bearing witness to its beauty and fragility. Their work reflects the profound knowledge held in the land, and the need to acknowledge Takayna as more than just wilderness โ€” it is a cultural landscape of deep and ongoing significance. Presented with sustainably sourced materials, this collection invites viewers to see, feel, and listen to the stories that live within Takayna, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.

โ€œThough the fires of the Takayna people no longer burn, the Old Knowledge remains in the land.โ€

We are deeply grateful for the support of the Bob Brown foundation in funding our journey out to remote Muntrikawripa (Sandy Cape) during which much of the imagery video material was created. We also wish to acknowledge their ongoing support of the Palawa community and tireless efforts towards the conservation and protection of the region.
