Artist Statement:
The red postbox on the footpath close to where I live is a deep blushing pink and tilts slightly away from the noisy passing traffic. Though it continues to receive mail and stands out cheerfully against the green roadside herbage its former primary role and vibrant redness is faded. While I contemplated whether it was more likely to be repainted or replaced I read online that Denmark, after 401 years, was ending its letter delivery service entirely and all Danish red postboxes would be retired within the year.
We are not posting letters as much as we once did and our red postboxes, also, are vanishing. I decided to record some of these robust and cheerful utilities for posterity. Their locations, often at the intersection of roads, mark the focal points of their neighbourhoods. While I was out painting and drawing the postboxes people passing would often stop to say hello.
The “Post Restante” exhibition is the result of this postbox-centric plein-air sketching, jounalling and posting project.
