Oils on linen.

“Moving my hands directly on the surface of the canvas, I wipe away the image.

Resisting the comfort of landscapes in this particular exhibition has been an excruciating process. My hand has rebelled against the discipline of these works with fierce gestures and hard, contrasting lines.  I have followed the impulse to rebel against myself.  Gesture after gesture, I have witnessed each climax of spontaneity fall to the harsh realisation that I have simply plucked another orange from an orange tree.

Even in the expansiveness of these works, my eye is drawn to a horizon.  The impulse to respond to a simple line is an insatiable urge as it seeks definition and identity.  Line after line we continue, until we sit as small boxes beside each other, rummaging through the isolation of our memory.

Belief is a callous on the wound of our humanity.

I am still searching here, in the endless blue.

Where now but Silence?”
