An expression of the mixed emotions — joy, sorrow, and everything in between — that come from living between two cultures, Australia and Korea, by Eun Ju Cho.
“I was born and raised in Korea, and came to Australia over 20 years ago, following my husband who had come here to study. Since then, I have developed my art career in this country and learned how to express myself through art.
Just before the COVID-19 pandemic began five years ago, I returned to Korea and continued my art practice there—until I came back to Australia last year.
My work is rooted in Korean aesthetics, but it aims to express the emotions I’ve experienced while living between Korea and Australia.
There is joy and happiness in life here, but also sorrow and a sense of longing that comes from being an outsider. When I returned to Korea, I felt similar emotions—familiar, yet strangely distant. Though I was born Korean, I had become used to life in Australia, and Korea began to feel unfamiliar.
As a resident artist at CAT this time, I wanted to explore and express these feelings in my work. Feelings that are beautiful and joyful—but also delicate and bittersweet.”
