Sky Omens is the debut album by Tasmanian born improvising violinist Annwen Roberts. Known for her work with the Nikodimos Improvisation Orchestra and art-rock band Think About You, to witness Annwen play live is ‘a spiritual experience’.

Annwen relocated to Melbourne to study jazz violin at the Victorian College of the Arts where she was a recipient of the Cassidy Bequest Scholarship, W Bardsley Award, and BMus Entrance grant, along with the IgniteLab grant to record her album.

Sky Omens references the ever changing but constantly present sky, and looking for comfort in the clouds. The album was put together over four years of music education at VCA. Her quintet carves out a new niche for the violin in improvised music, as both a lead line instrument and a vocal replacement; Annwen’s violin tone is emulative of the human voice, capturing an emotional ambiguity that vacillates between hope, despair and realization.

From soulful modern folk (choon, keep yr memories) to jazz-influenced hard bop style swing (iron fairy, headwind, fatherless folk), the track list is captivatingly diverse. Sky Omens establishes Annwen as a composer and bandleader in her own right. The sound is rich, evocative, full of intense, almost hard-rock style climaxes with the soaring, ethereal sound of the violin.
