Salamanca Arts Centre stands on the lands of the Mouheneener people, the Traditional Custodians of this region and part of the oldest continuing culture on earth. We pay deep respect to Elders past and present, and recognise the enduring connection between this place and the long, rich history of storytelling, creativity, and community.
Located in the iconic sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place, SAC is a vibrant cultural precinct and home to a diverse community of artists, makers, performers, and creative thinkers. Founded in 1976 as a community-led initiative, we’ve grown into one of Tasmania’s most significant arts organisations. It is a place where art is made, shared, and experienced every day.
As custodians of these remarkable heritage buildings, we take our role seriously in preserving and enlivening them. Our core purpose is to ensure these spaces remain active and open, places where contemporary art can thrive and where the past and present are held in meaningful dialogue.
Our vision is to be Hobart‘s Home of The Arts. We aim to be a locally loved and nationally recognised cultural icon that supports creativity, welcomes diverse voices, and offers space for bold new ideas. To do this, we focus on three key strategic priorities: supporting artists, activating and caring for our buildings, and creating opportunities for community connection.
Everything we do is grounded in a clear mission: to connect, celebrate, and champion the arts in Tasmania. Through exhibitions, performances, residencies, retail spaces, and public programs, we support creative practice and open the door to powerful cultural experiences for locals and visitors alike.
We’re guided by a set of living values: Free artistic expression, accountability, altruism, collaboration, commitment, empathy, excellence in creativity, diversity of opinion, sustainability, passion, relevance, and respect. We believe art helps us understand what it means to be human, and we honour each artist’s right to explore, question, and express the world as they see it.
