This exhibition of new work by emerging artist Suemi Chiba explores the possibilities of clay within two different residency places, combining a variety of techniques and materials that the artist experimented with to develop skills and to explore a personal narrative.

“I would like to present an exhibition of ceramic works that combine the rough qualities of dark clays with the refined qualities of white clays. In ceramics different types of clays are generally used for different purposes; they match certain glazes and display different qualities that highlight specific processes and firing types. White clays are often used in refined and decorative work such as with porcelain figures or bone china tableware and ornaments. Often these works are decorated with painting and metallic lusters. Rougher darker clays are often used for more sculptural work and can be used in atmospheric firings where the firing itself plays a large role in the look of the work where effects are created from the fire or chemical reactions of soda and ash. Many ceramic artists will lean towards one of these two very different directions.

I come from two different cultures that have a long history of ceramic traditions. I am half-Japanese, half-British, grew up in Alberta, Canada, and live in Tasmania, Australia. My ceramic style is influenced by all these cultures and I am still forming my own narrative in my work. I love Japanese techniques, atmospheric firings and the Japanese aesthetic and I also love highly decorative work that might have been seen in my British grandmother’s house.

I am currently completing a six month internship at Gaya Ceramic Arts and will have also completed a residency at the Medalta Historic Clay District in Alberta, Canada. During this time I have the opportunity to complete work with atmospheric firings such as soda, raku and wood firing as well as experimenting with different types of clay. I am working on combining elements of highly decorative work in porcelain with heavier clays used in atmospheric firing.”

Get ready for an unforgettable night of live music!
Pete Cornelius is thrilled to unveil his brand-new album SOUTHERN, and he can’t wait to bring it to life on stage.

To celebrate, he’s hitting the road with a talented lineup of long-time musical collaborators and a few special guests joining in at each stop. This tour is more than a series of shows—it’s a gathering of artists who have shaped his music and shared the journey with him.

Expect soulful tunes, gritty guitar riffs, and raw energy as Pete and his crew deliver the best of Southern alongside fan favourites and maybe even some surprise performances.

Come be part of the celebration, help launch Southern in style, and let’s make it a night to remember!

Joining the line-up in Hobart is young folk singer songwriter Rupert Bullard.

“With Southern, Pete Cornelius has crafted an album of grit, toughness and beauty. His guitar playing is as lyrical and evocative as his vocal delivery and features as a second “voice” on the record – the two complementing rather than competing with each other in sheer storytelling perfection. From the deepest south of Tasmania, Pete Cornelius has revealed himself as the real deal and created an album that showcases an artist at the peak of his powers.”
– Josh Cunningham, The Waifs

Japanese-born Montz Matsumoto‘s banjo and voice have entertained Australian audiences in festivals, venues, local markets and streets for almost 20 years. Montz and his band Voicestrings will showcase his new album Missing Home. The audience will experience many mesmerizing moments of tranquillity, excitement, affinity, and innovation.

This is the concert to showcase the music from Montz’s 3rd Album Missing Home. The album is a collection of Bluegrass, Celtic and Montz’s original Japanese songs and instrumentals which takes you through many mesmerizing moments of foot-tapping rhythm and virtuosic improvisations and tranquillizing melodies. All the musicians in this project have a wide range of musical backgrounds and experiences.

North Carolinian bass player Ross Sermons toured all over the US and has experienced almost all kinds of American music. Huon-based flautist Elisse Kleiner has been experimenting with a wide music horizon like folk, Brazilian, and contemporary music after she studied classical music and performed with the Melbourne Symphony. Paddy Montgomery on guitar and bouzouki is one of the most demanded instrumentalists in the Australian acoustic music scene who is very fluent in Celtic, Bluegrass, Greek and Middle Eastern traditional music. Cloudy Davey has been singing all around the Barossa Valley, SA.

An exhibition by Rachel Bremner, exploring the expressive possibilities of contemporary mosaic using an improvised process highlighting texture, reflection, the effects of changing light on the surface.

“From early childhood leading up to my life as a visual artist, I trained and performed as a professional violinist. I continue to be fascinated by the similarities and differences between the two forms of artistic expression.

I had never conceived of music as an art form that needed words to provide background or convey what I mean to express.

Expressing myself in words has never come easily to me, I can rarely find the right ones for my purpose, music was always the perfect medium for my intense  sense of privacy. In music performance I could present my inner world to the audience, all my thoughts, reactions, emotions without having to describe the background story.

When I started to put my mosaic work out into the world, in contrast to music-making, I struggled with the obligation in the art world to use words when presenting to an audience. I felt a growing conflict with the wordless immediacy with which I wanted to engage and how much words can interfere with that engagement.

I presented the past exhibition as  an intense offering to the audience to pause, observe each work and examine emotional reactions in their own terms, with no titles, no accompanying prompts.

This Second Cycle is intended as an expression of where my life, imagination and emotional being have moved since my previous exhibition.”

An exploration of Tasmania’s dolerite and granite, by Anna Brooks

“Tasmania’s geology has fascinated me since I first saw the towering dolerite pillars on kunanyi/Mt Wellington 20 years ago.  Their straight columns and dark vertical chasms are truly inspiring.  Tasmania has the largest exposure of dolerite in the world, and roughly a third of our state is dolerite.  These rock columns therefore are a strong part of my sense of Tasmania, and have come to feel ‘home’ to me.  Likewise, the granite of the east coast and Flinders island, with its rounded sea-worn curves and orange lichen, give these places much of their character.

As a rock climber, I have had a very personal association with rock.  Climbing involves constantly feeling the rock surface to find protrusions and cracks that might supply a finger or toe hold.  The rock can become the most intimate of friends.  In this exhibition I have tried to capture the varied shapes of rock and stone and also the closer details of texture and pattern.  I have included ink drawings, acrylic paintings and photographic works.”

Only one lighthouse. Two lighthouse keepers.

Usually the lighthouse is manned by one keeper at a time. This year however, the changeover hasn’t gone to plan. And two lighthouse keepers are stuck with each other for the season.

Join prize winning improvisers Harris and Tweed (Rowan Harris and Matt Wilson) for a tale of two men who can’t escape.
