An exhibition by two Tasmanian landscape painters, each in the thrall of the natural world. Robyn Harman and Jill Crawford examine changing and challenging ecological conditions, from distant horizons to close and enveloping images of forest floors.

Jill Crawford has created a series of works which communicate her growing interest in an area of bushland that exists along the boundary of the college where she works. Exit the oval, traverse the apron and enter the bush. Stand still for a moment and listen. It’s hard to remember that a shopping centre exists to the west. An ecologist recently opened Jill’s eyes to the importance of this tract of land. She talked of what once was and her vision of what could be again. The forest floor, once blanketed with native flowers such as orchids, chocolate lilies and yellow stars, has changed vastly.

In pursuit of establishing gardens where the grass was soft underfoot and the environment was far less prickly and harsh, land was cleared and alien species introduced. Heavy feet trod, seeds were dropped, and grass clippings smothered all things delicate underneath.

Jill Crawford examines the diversity of flora that she finds within a small, defined quadrat of the forest floor. The sharp, the spiky, the barbed, scratchy plants to be found there are photographed, drawn and then translated into a series of monochromatic acrylic paintings on canvas.

Robyn Harman continues her exploration of Tasmania’s wild coastlines and islands, the passage of time, of the exchange between the human and the natural, seascapes and their embodiment of our dreams and stories.

In this exhibition she focuses on the challenging environment endured by ecological systems. Rocky outcrops stand mute and resolute in steadfast solitude, bracing against the storms of surrounding oceans. They are signifiers of isolation but also protection and shelter for many species. The constant movement of wind and water, the gradual erosion of stone, changing climate, all of which test their capacity to resist and survive.

Rocks and islands provide ecological niches, protection from the wind, rain and churning sea. The forest floor, refugia persisting in an urbanised environment, carries its richly biodiverse lineage despite the pressure of invasion.

These are sanctuaries; a haven for a myriad of animals, birds and insects and home to a diverse range of endangered plants.

What is my self?
What is my mind?
And what happens when they fall out of alignment?

“My work confronts the internal struggle between mind and self. Each piece becomes a site of resistance — a space where conflict is not hidden but revealed. At its darkest, the mind attempts to silence the self. But the self does not vanish. It endures — fierce, luminous, and unbroken.

This body of work tells a story of disconnection, resilience, and the quiet power of reclaiming one’s truth. It is about the act of minding my self — not as weakness, but as strength.

An expression of the mixed emotions — joy, sorrow, and everything in between — that come from living between two cultures, Australia and Korea, by Eun Ju Cho.

“I was born and raised in Korea, and came to Australia over 20 years ago, following my husband who had come here to study. Since then, I have developed my art career in this country and learned how to express myself through art.

Just before the COVID-19 pandemic began five years ago, I returned to Korea and continued my art practice there—until I came back to Australia last year.

My work is rooted in Korean aesthetics, but it aims to express the emotions I’ve experienced while living between Korea and Australia.

There is joy and happiness in life here, but also sorrow and a sense of longing that comes from being an outsider. When I returned to Korea, I felt similar emotions—familiar, yet strangely distant. Though I was born Korean, I had become used to life in Australia, and Korea began to feel unfamiliar.

As a resident artist at CAT this time, I wanted to explore and express these feelings in my work. Feelings that are beautiful and joyful—but also delicate and bittersweet.”

Stitch Insects is a lovingly handcrafted exploration of insects, surface patterning and material exploration using a mixture of fabrics, cottons, decorative stitching and tea.

“I love making things with my hands. Objects that reveal the human element, the processes involved and the imperfections of the hand crafted. Stitch Insects has taken time to complete, and I enjoy the slow process as a contradiction to the accelerated nature and current AI leaning culture of our society. Each seam, stitch and knot are unique.  I have loved, hated and felt ambivalent about it. Finally completing the piece, running my hands over its surface, there is a wonderful sense of accomplishment. Looking at all the insects in their various forms, I marvel at these precious little creatures the basically run the world. And I wonder what on earth I am going to do with all my newly found spare time…

This piece was created using primarily second-hand or left over fabrics, manifesting themselves as surface patterning, material experimentation and transformation of shapes.

The base of the garment is a left-over toile from a sewing pattern overworked with Victorian style ‘crazy’ patchwork in scraps of silk, cotton, polyester and other fabrics. As with traditional Victorian patchwork the seams are embroidered with a variety of decorative stitches. The surface has been overlayed with a variety of insects using cross-stitch and stumpwork embroidery. The sleeves are worked with different knots and stitches to create ‘wildscapes’ that reflect microenvironments.”

Daily Painting in action from 1:00pm (Monday – Friday)

An awe inspired exploration of Tasmania’s mountain wilderness through the poetry of paint, touching on light gilded rock faces and alpine wildflowers tenaciously bejewelling the edges of blue shadowed chasms.

Perhaps ‘I lost my compass’ would be an apt title too.

After many years of ‘getting around to it’ Mel Hills has finally started this series of mountain celebration paintings.

Come for the ultimate lightweight bushwalk.
Guaranteed no scrub.
Fitness level optional.

Leave your heavy gear behind and prepare to have your breath snatched by awe inspiring mountain vistas, yawning chasms, towering peaks nd scintillating waterfalls. See the mist veils rising- giving glimpses of blue shadowed cliffs, studded with the gems of alpine flowers.

Imagine an icy dip in a mountain tarn while the last light gilds the surrounding peaks in gold and the cold mountain wind whispers through the crags..

With evident inspiration and influence from great Tasmanian landscape photographers such as Dombrovski and Truchannas, Mel composes poetic and breathtaking paintings of our iconic landscapes and details the flora and fauna that help make them so special.

Each painting is meticulously researched and may have a supporting folio of work, enabling a glimpse into the creation process.

The main body of this exhibition is a series of oil paintings on triple primed board and hand framed in timber. All have hanging wires and  D rings attached. Full interpretation information is presented with the artwork and also attached to the rear of the painting.

The artist will be present for the duration of the exhibition for ridicule, track notes, general chit chat as desired and is likely to be plying a brush for part of each day.

RAW Exhibition is a unique perspective on how I capture my photography,
turning everyday objects into beauty. I create my images by experimenting
with different concepts, lighting and techniques. Each photo gives a unique
visual experience.

RAW exhibition is about my personal journey of discovery with photography, exploring this in a digital age, through non figurative abstract photography. I utilise the power of the camera while working in a controlled environment as well as being strongly focused on the use of objects which exist in our immediate physical world. I find inspiration in the simplest things, and notice beauty in things that most people don’t, then exploring something so mundane and creating something so unique. The relationship I have with the object, lights, and my camera, tells a unique story of what I see through my lens. Every photo captures a moment in time.

I’ve always had a passion and respect for traditional photography and draw inspiration from it. However it has been done time and time again in the photographer’s own style. I want to create and capture something new. When an observer walks into my exhibition, or looks at one of my photos, I want to challenge them and their emotional response.

In the digital age we live in, and now with AI, I feel the fundamental skills of photography haven’t been given the appreciation, respect and recognition they deserve. The journey of photography from those early processes of the 1800s to the digital age is truly remarkable and fascinating. I feel it is slowly being lost and I hope that I challenge the observer to question and research the history of photography and to use it in their own photography.

My style and passion for the use of the camera removes the need for post production tools like photoshop, unless used as if I was in a dark room. I want to use my camera to its full potential and to show how powerful the camera is on its own. This exhibition is a series of unique abstract and dynamic non figurative style photographs, exploring how powerful the camera is, pushing it to its absolute limits, while using and exploring traditional methods in a digital format.”

Improvised Performances @ 1:00pm daily

Palimpsest-as-Process will interrogate how we make decisions around discarding or reinventing art & how art practices might celebrate the processes of creativity.
