Pianist/composer Louise Denson will enjoy the great privilege of presenting her rarely performed compositions for quintet with the powerful and expressive frontline of saxophonist Phil Bywater and trombonist Stevie McEntee. The exciting program will include On the Level (very funky), Who Knew Blues (now you know!), Lost My Heart (recorded by multi-Downbeat-poll-winning trombonist Bill Watrous), and many other melodious and groovy tunes.

Drummer Tom Robb and bassist Jed Adams complete the line-up.

You won’t want to miss it!

Louise is well known on the Hobart jazz scene leading her own groups and working with saxophonists Spike Mason, Ken Schroder and Jesse Bowden, and samba drummer Carlos Ferreira among others.  She has completed a number of extended composition projects, the most recent being Love Asunder with award-winning vocalist Elly Hoyt. Louise’s compositions have been widely performed and recorded, and she has played in festivals across Canada and Australia, and in the UK.

Phil has recently returned to Tasmania after many successful years in Melbourne as a player and educator. He led the bands Phil Bywater’s Buried Treasure Fallingwater Trio and Big Fela Afrobeat Orchestra and was a key member of many others. Phil’s performance experience is vast and diverse, encompassing reggae, funk, jazz, afrobeat, world music, free improv, punk, rock, musical theatre and contemporary classical music.

Stevie is a mover and shaker in the Hobart scene both as a player/composer/band leader and an arts administrator. Before settling in Hobart, Stevie toured internationally as a freelance musician. By day Stevie works as the co-founder and artistic director of the Lutruwita Art Orchestra and as co-artistic director of the Clarence Jazz Festival, by night they lead Hobart’s 12-piece all original Afrobeat dance band Baba Bruja and play trombone in the hugely popular reggae-fusion band Boil Up.

~~~~~
“A quick Internet search reveals that Latin America refers to the lands colonised by the French, Spanish and Portuguese during the maritime ‘Age of Discovery’ of the new World by Christopher Columbus and others around 1492.
The distinction from other American colonies of the Dutch and British was first made only in the 19th century, using the differences in the predominance of Latin in the languages of these powers, possibly to keep the distance between Protestant and Catholic countries nice and sharp.
Latin American music came about with the introduction of slavery, where Africans were brought against their will to work the plantations and elsewhere in the new colonies, and even if they were deprived of their drums, they brought with them the rhythms central to their cultures.
From these dismal beginnings of colonialism, many wonderful fusions emerged, where African rhythm fused with European languages and cultures to create many styles of so-called Latin American music. With the advent of freedom and independence this music kept developing, and with modern technologies, like the radio and recordings, spread back around the world creating dance crazes, pop music movements, even Herb Alpert and the Tijuana brass.  Famous amongst these are the cha cha, the tango, the conga, salsa, samba, bossa nova, and merengue.
This band comprises: Ken Schroder (sax/clarinet), Aaron Entresz (guitar), Louise Denson (piano), Ben Brinkhoff (double bass), Liam O’Leary (drum kit), Pablo Cadenas (percussion).
To me, Latin music is like a mountain, or even a mountain range, like the Himalayas, and I must walk around it, looking for footholds for a jazz mountaineer to attempt to climb some of the peaks. Jazz Latin is a fusion; often those who wrote famous Latin tunes had no idea that jazz saxophonists would attempt to play their songs.  What the jazz player looks for is a great tune, and Brazilian tunes possess that quality in spades; powerful rhythms, music which already bears the stamp of fusion with jazz, like Bossa Nova with Joao Gilberto, Astrid Gilberto and Stan Getz, or Dizzy Gillespie with Cuban conga genius, Chano Pozo. Drummers like Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Art Taylor all had African roots to their drumming, even if it was swing or bebop or even cool jazz.
We Got Rhythm draws on all these influences, and we even indulge in a little swing, and, above all, we’d like to share our enthusiasm for this music with you, the audience.”
Ken Schroder
~~~~~~~~~~

In this concert, which will launch our Salamanca Jazz 2025 concert series, the Jode Brewster Trio will pay tribute to Joe Henderson’s landmark album, The State Of The Tenor (Live at The Village Vanguard). Recorded in 1985 in New York, this album is held in very high regard as one of the most important albums that worked towards the development of chord-less trio performance and the jazz language as a whole.
The Jode Brewster Trio will perform the album in its entirety, plus some additional tunes from surrounding Joe Henderson Albums and other favourites.
This band promises to deliver a captivating performance along with information about the tunes to give listeners a deeper understanding of the music.

Jed Adams is a Hobart-based double-bass and saxophone player. He has been in and around the Hobart scene for over 10 years, and has had the fortune of collaborating with some of Hobart’s best musicians in that time.
