SUMMARY:Wagga Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Camilla Ker\n\n\n\nExhibition Dates:Friday April 3 – Frida
 y April 25Monday – Friday: 9:00am – 5:00pmWEEKENDS CLOSEDA contempor
ary reworking of the Australian Wagga quilt using salvaged textiles.Thes
e quilts draw on the Australian tradition of Wagga quilts—improvised b
edcovers historically made by rural women from whatever materials were a
vailable: wool offcuts\, worn clothing\, flour sacks\, and other remnant
s of domestic life. Born from necessity\, Wagga quilts transformed disca
rded materials into objects of warmth and care.Reimagining this traditio
n for the present day\, the works in this exhibition are constructed fro
m discarded clothing and gleaned fabrics gathered through everyday life.
Like their historical counterparts\, these quilts value resourcefulness
and tenderness\, proposing softness and reuse as a response to disposab
ility. The exhibition also draws on the tradition of Victorian diary and
memory quilts\, which recorded personal histories through fabric using e
mbroidered names\, dates\, and symbolic imagery. In Tasmania\, historic
works such as the Westbury Quilt\, created in Westbury in the mid-19th c
entury\, similarly demonstrate quilting as a form of social record\, pre
serving relationships and community histories through stitched contribut
ions.Bringing these traditions together\, the quilts extend historical p
ractices of reuse. Made from everyday materials\, they hold traces of li
ved experience while transforming discarded textiles into objects of com
 fort.\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\nWheelchair access via Lift in&nbsp
