SUMMARY:Three places
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Kevin Crowe\n\n\n\nOpening Hours:Monday – Fri
 day 9:00am – 5:00pmWeekends CLOSED\n\n\n\nOpening Event :Friday 4 July
  2025\, 5:30pm – 7:30pmThe Meehan Range\, Pontville and Surry Hills\,
Sydney\, each gave rise to a visual puzzle.&nbsp\; How to depict the blu
e-teal spring growth of the Risdonii slopes against dull Stringybark? Wh
at would the resurrection look like at Pontville? How the dark cavern of
street trees contrasts with the scorching Sydney&nbsp\; sun?\n\n\n\n“
Inspired by my landscape painting practice\, recent classes with Jake Wa
 lker\, and visiting my daughters\,&nbsp\;Three places&nbsp\;explores the
relationship between place and person. How our perception and depiction
of place is redefined by its connection with people we know.\n\n\n\nThe
works have their origin in three very different locations. The Meehan R
ange as a backdrop to Flagstaff Gully and Mornington\, the historic town
ship of Pontville\, and the inner city\, Sydney suburb of Surry Hills.\n
\n\n\nThe Meehan range is partly suburban (my eldest daughter lives clos
e by)\, partly tamed countryside. Mountain bikers cross it. Yet it is ho
me to eucalyptus risdonii which seems to require a stony\, dry\, north w
esterly aspect. Only this allows it to survive and gives rise occasional
ly to a brilliant blue flush of growth amid the dull greens of other gum
trees.\n\n\n\nPontville – Brighton is a mixture of historic graveyard
s churches\, and emerald green sporting areas. Scenes enjoyed by our sec
ond daughter.\n\n\n\nSurry Hills with its nineteenth century dock worker
s terrace houses is a place in transition. The street trees are a consta
nt but add a dimension of change when providing deep shade or filtered l
ight over the Victorian facades. Our youngest daughter’s home is here.
&nbsp\;\n\n\n\nI have used a less descriptive\, partly abstract method t
o try to communicate the transformations these places show and their mea
ning for those who observe them.\n\n\n\n“Transformation” and “mean
ing”\, has taken me towards an attempted portrayal of the magic or spi
rit of the places\, while speculating on the relationships between place
\, the people there and the observer. St Matthews Cemetery Pontville is
the frame for the ultimate transformation\, the resurrection!”–&nbsp
