Notes:\n\n\n\nVilla-Lobos String Quartet No 1\n\n\n\nVilla-Lobos’s St
ring Quartet No 1 was written in Fribourgo\, 1915.&nbsp\; Or was it?&nbs
 p\;The version we hear today is Villa-Lobos's 1946 re-write of the&nbsp\
;Suíte Graciosa&nbsp\;from 1915.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Though\, according to emi
nent musicologist\, Eero Tarasti\, that "Musical analysis supports the h
ypothesis that it really is a work of youth. In the First String Quartet
the Brazilianism is manifested rather mildly.&nbsp\; The work is\, in f
act\, a series of small mood pictures (somewhat in the style of Nepomuce
no and Levy)" - Tarasti (1995).\n\n\n\nThe work is in six movements:1. C
 antilena - Andante2. Brincadeira - Allegretto Scherzando3. Canto Lirico
 - Moderato4. Canconeta - Andantino quasi Allegretto5. Melancolia - Lento
 6. Saltando como um Saci - Allegro \n\n\n\nTarasti continues\, “The p
otpourri form of the First Quartet refers to the Suite populaire brasile
ira&nbsp\;(for guitar) from the same time."&nbsp\;\n\n\n\nThe premiere o
f SQ#1 was at the Friburgo home of Brazilian composer Homero Barreto.\n\
n\n\nGinastera's String Quartet No 1\n\n\n\nAlbert Ginastera wrote his
First String Quartet in Buenos Aires\, during 1948. This work was award
ed the “Carlo Lopez Buchardo” prize that same year in the first nati
onal competition for composers organised by the Wagnerian Society of Bue
nos Aires in memory of the Argentine composer Lopez Buchardo. The work w
as first performed in the Wagnerian Society the following year\, and was
selected by the International Society for Contemporary Music for its XX
Vth Festival program in Frankfurt (1951)\; on that occasion it was perfo
rmed by the Koechert Quartet. The work consists of the usual four movemen
ts – Allegro\, Scherzo\, Adagio and Rondo – wherein rhythms of Argen
tine folk music can still be perceived through a re-creation of an imagi
nary folklore. “In this Quartet”\, said Ginastera\, “I find that s
ome characteristics of my own artistic personality materialize for the f
irst time: strong and incisive rhythms\, adagios that are anxiety-ridden
\, lyrical and contemplative and atmospheres that are mysterious\, noctu
rnal and surrealistic”. \n\n\n\nThis concert program also includes th
e World Premiere performance of a new String Quartet by Tasmanian comp
oser\, Tom Misson\, and 'Movement for String Quartet' by Tasmanian compo
 ser\, Gary Wain.\n\n\n\n\nBook Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\nAcc
