Tarot

Tarot was formed in 2011 by Will Fried with the goal of recreating the mystical atmosphere produced by bands such as Uriah Heep, Rainbow, Wishbone Ash, Pagan Altar and Deep Purple.
Over the next few years Tarot released a number of demos and EPs that lay the foundations of Tarot’s sound. In early 2015 as demand for Tarot’s music outgrew its availability the band put together a full hour of recordings into “The Warriors Spell”; a CD that compiled the previous three EPs and two brand new songs.

As the sales figures grew the band turned to German record label Ván Records with the idea of releasing the compilation as a deluxe double LP. Ván happily agreed and offered to continue working with the band on future recordings.

This culminated in the 2016 release of “Reflections”, a refinement of the band’s signature sound: melodic guitar parts, double tracked harmony vocals, a strong Hammond organ and synthesizer presence and intricate, catchy song structures. This release drew further success and critical acclaim, and among other favourable reviews was picked as the editor’s choice in the April 2016 edition of Iron Fist Magazine.

During the winter months of 2016 the lineup was expanded to play live shows. Since then the band has played many successful shows around Australia and features Will Fried on guitar and vocals, Dave Harrington-George on organ and synthesizers, Felix Russell on guitar and vocals, Dave Walsh on bass and vocals, and Matt Frodsham on Drums.

WOE

Hailing from Tasmania, WOE performs mean traditional doom metal in the style of Trouble and Pentagram. “Czernobog” (2022) is their first release, and features members of Tarot and The Wizar’d.

The virtuosity of guitarist Russell’s craft instantly sets WOE apart from most modern doom metal bands. His endless barrage of haunting riffs – an essential part of any significant traditional doom record – are bolstered by a rhythm section built like the stone walls of a looming tower. As their album’s title suggests, WOE’s lyrics concern treachery and tragedy, as well as struggles with external forces of evil and internal demons. All tales told with bleak yet soulful vocals.

Award-winning performance Flamencodanza : an inspired, powerful and elegant show of Flamenco dance and guitar by Aylin Bayaz and Raul Mannola.

Flamencodanza is a project that started five years ago at the Avignon Fringe in France, and has now reached a point where different elements fuse together in a unique manner producing an award winning, surprising show full of energy, beauty and inspiration. Elements of flamenco, Brazilian music and jazz give the music a variety of colours. The passionate dancing is based on flamenco with it’s fiery footwork, adding elements from modern dance styles.

With a trajectory of decades as a professional guitarist, Raul has an extensive discography of both traditional Flamenco and Jazz Fusion. The contemporary Flamenco dance of Aylin is made of strength, elegance and delicacy.

A Sea Voyage | A Tragedy | A Love Story

Michael Veitch (of The Full Monty, D-Generation and Fast Forward fame) plays the hero of one of the most dramatic, yet now forgotten, true chapters from Australia’s maritime history. Based on Michael’s book of the same name, Hell Ship is a tale of hardship and heroism; of survival and love; of disaster and redemption. 

In the spring of 1852, the magnificent sailing ship Ticonderoga set course from Liverpool to Victoria filled with mainly Scots Highlander families, all hoping to find a new life in a new land. However, on the voyage, disaster struck when a deadly typhus epidemic erupted throughout her decks, taking scores of her passengers. On the high seas, an epic struggle of life and death played out. 

Michael is accompanied live on stage by the exquisite musical talents of Tom Veitch, his talented cellist and composer son. 

This is an hour of drama and music not to be missed.

Anyone who has seen Nadira Farid perform knows this petite bundle of dynamite entertains with oodles of contagious joy.

Over the past 10 years Nadira has performed at Clubs and Festivals across Australia, accompanied by leading Jazz musicians – and it doesn’t stop here – Bob Sedergreen and Ted Vining are both inductees to the Australian Jazz Hall Of Fame!  Add Hamish Houston, who has taken over Nick Haywood’s mantle as the ‘most in demand bass player in Tasmania, and it’s a top shelf band.

This is the start of a Birdie Belgium song. Just like her music, Birdie is a late bloomer. At the age of 30, during her travels around Australia, she picked up the guitar for the first time and has been writing and playing her original songs ever since.Nowadays, Birdie committed to her music dream and left her old life behind. She recently started her lap around Australia, in her ‘Troopy’, touring with her music.Birdie writes about subjects that are poignant and relatable, and her open approach bridges the gap between listener and performer, making individuals feel like they can approach her and share their stories.

Cumbia Cosmonauts DJ SET (Moses Iten)

Is a Melbourne-based DJ who has toured all over Australia and the world as a Cumbia and Bass specialist, playing tropical music from his vast crates of vinyl and digital dubplates. As a producer, Moses (Saca La Mois DJ) is best known as CUMBIA COSMONAUTS, and with Christoph H. Mueller (Gotan Project/Roedelius/Plaza Francia) is part of the THE SWISS CONSPIRACY. Moses is also a co-founder of the CUMBIA MASSIVE platform showcasing DJs and producers of tropical electronic music inspired by Mexican sound system culture, and recently assisted in the English translation of the book Ojos Suaves/Soft Eyes: Sound System Cumbia from Mexico to the World by Mirjam Wirz. Moses Iten’s mixes have been commissioned by national radio in Australia (ABC RN), Germany (Funkhaus Europa), Austria (FM4), and until recently was host of Space Is The Place on Melbourne’s top music station PBS 106.7 FM. By day, Moses is doing a PhD on DJ performance at RMIT University in Melbourne. The mission is to keep learning and sharing music from all over the globe, exposing Melbourne to unreleased and undefined new sounds sourced straight from producer to you on the dancefloor.

XIXA

Xixa is pronounced Chi-cha after the Amazonian style of Cumbia that is commonly known to come from Peru, chicha. This somewhat psychedelic style of Cumbia was a way for traditional Andean music to remain current with younger audiences. This style is loose, fun and very seriously full of silly sounds.

We are a bunch of mates (practically family) who used to play cumbia together in Chupacabra, after years dedicating time to other projects we decided to get back together to play cumbia and have fun. Xixa is an 8 piece band that can sometimes grow to 10 or more if we have friends or family in the audience that want to join us. We formed in the lull that was the 2020 pandemic and have performed in a few places here and there including LACAT’s Day of the Dead Festival. The pandemic isn’t officially over but we are finally ready to hit the stage and share the love.

Cumbia is designed for dancing and having a good time, we throw in a power ballad or two to give you a quick breather. Horns, guitar, keys and rhythmic percussion join forces to give Tasmania XIXA! Viva la Cumbia, Viva Xixa!

You can expect to hear some of Gus’s original funk compositions as well as arrangements of music made famous by musical legends that include but are not limited too; Maceo Parker, Joshua Redman, The Brecker Brothers and Weather Report.

Gus Leighton

Gus Leighton is a 27-year-old Australian contemporary tenor saxophonist based in Hobart Tasmania.
Growing up listening to a variety of music, Gus soon developed an affinity with the sounds of jazz and country music which have had a significant impact upon his career. Gus’ improvisational and compositional language is heavily influenced by Lester Young, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz and Wayne Shorter. These four saxophonists have become the focus of Gus’ PhD Thesis topic (currently) titled ‘Creating an original sound: a study of Lester Young’s improvisational language, its influence on Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon and Wayne Shorter, and, how this has informed my development as an improviser.’

Gus is a well-respected saxophonist, composer, arranger and bandleader of ‘Uncle Gus and The Rimshots’, ‘The Gus Leighton Quartet’ and ‘The Greenrises Jazz Orchestra’. Outside of his own projects Gus performs at a variety of different festivals/events as both a leader and accompanist – notably accompanying Dami Im at the Festival of Voices Big Sing Bonfire in 2019 and Andrew O’Keefe for the Hobart show of Andrew O’Keefe ‘Shouts’ Johnny O’Keefe.
In 2020 Gus was selected to be the Musical Director of the 2020 Virtual Big Sing Bonfire for Festival of Voices, and has served as musical director of various other projects in Tasmania. Gus was also the recipient of the Jack Duffy Memorial award presented by the Hobart Jazz Club and the Musician’s Union of Tasmania for his musical ability and what he gives back to the greater jazz community.

Lasca has developed her very own unique flavor of slightly bittersweet melancholy songs. Heartfelt, honest and deceptively simple, Lasca Dry’s songs are direct, emotive and play with haunting vocals and contagious melodies. Lasca sings of life, love and loss carrying her listeners into new places and other realms.

エミエミ (emi emi) is the experimental J-pop project from 25-year-old Emi Doi. Born and raised in lutruwita to her Launcestonian mum and Japanese dad, エミエミ combines Emi’s existing indie-music flavour with uptempo Japanese-pop, drawing on inspiration from the likes of Kero Kero Bonito, CHAI, Kyary Pyamu Pyamu and Superorganism. Her songs use a mixture of English and Japanese lyrics to explore her three emotional states of being – happy, heartsick and hungry. 楽しんでください (≧▽≦)

Coming off of his debut EP launch ‘Please Stand Bye’ in 2021 and his album ‘Ostracon’ with DJ Mike in 2022, SteezE has written a diverse range of songs about love, fear, community and capitalism. He aims to bring thought provoking poetry to his audience while also embracing his own unique style of improv to involve the crowd.
