Damien Kingston Quartet ‘Harmony’ album Launch
and supported by the Annwen Roberts Quartet

The Damien Kingston Quartet, featuring Matt Boden on Piano, Hamish Houston on Bass, and Tom Robb on drums, has released its latest album ‘Harmony’ on vinyl, and will be launching the record with a live performance.

The music from the group features dense textures, fluttering melodies, and huge walls of sound; rhythmic intricacy and some dramatic harmony shine through in music that prioritises songcraft and resonance.

The Damien Kingston Quartet is an ensemble dedicated to performing original compositions that mix elements of jazz, free improv, and traditional song form. The band has been performing together since 2018 and to date has three albums out; the latest, ‘Harmony’, was released on ABC Jazz and Scratch Match Records.

The Quartet will be playing material from the new album alongside some new tunes, and will be supported by a set of original tunes and standards from the Annwen Roberts Quartet.

Annwen Roberts Quartet Bio:

Annwen is a violinist from Tasmania, where she grew up playing Tasmanian folk tunes.

She has a keen interest in the practices of bebop, Mingus-style big band music and free improvisation.
Her musical pursuits now incorporate her folk roots, while looking forward to the future of Australian jazz and improvisation, drawing on influences such as Regina Carter, Joe Lovano, Charlie Parker and Joshua Redman.

Annwen’s performances include Tasmanian festivals Dark Mofo, MONA, the Spiegeltent, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and Clarence Jazz Festival. She also performs around Australia with her quartet, playing her original compositions.

She has played with musicians such as Andrea Keller, the Mahavishnu Tribute Orchestra, Sandy Evans, Twine, Ben Lee, Sasha Gavlek, Adrien Cunningham, and the Foley artists. Annwen has studied under musicians such as John Hoffman, Brett Williams, Sunny Kim, Johnathan Zwartz, Sam Anning, Kelly Ottaway, Danny Healy, Andrea Keller, Carlo Barbaro, Peter Knight (former director of the AAO) and Barney McCall.

Her debut album is in the works.

Salamanca Jazz launches its 2024 live music program with Nadira & Friends

Nadira is this unstoppable person; Full of energy and enthusiasm. 

Nadira sings with the kind of pure joy that is totally contagious. “Those who have been to her shows knows that this petite, yet commanding, performer has a punk-ish attitude and on-stage banter that could be a comedy act on its own” (Australianjazz.net). 

Over the past ten years Nadira Farid has performed at Clubs and Festivals across Australia, and entertained the audience with her fresh, cheeky renditions of jazz standards and tunes from The Great American Songbook. 

When the rhythm gets lively, you won’t be able to resist hitting the dance floor and swaying to her upbeat melodies. But it’s in the hush of a ballad, when Nadira’s voice pours out like velvet, that she’ll leave you breathless, holding on to her every note in suspended silence. 

For Salamanca Jazz in February 2024, Nadira will be performing as part of a sextet, accompanied by Aaron Entresz (guitar), Iestyn Parry (piano), Jesse Bowden (sax), Jed Adams (d/bass) and Bruce Innocent (drums).

Join DOP in celebrating this momentous occasion as they release their debut album “Embrace”. Guaranteed to be an exhilarating concert experience and an unforgettable evening of improvised music from these two virtuosos.

Embrace is the culmination of more than 15 years of experimentation and ongoing collaboration between drummer Alf Jackson and guitarist Julius Schwing, having arrived at a way of playing purely their own based on a shared desire to create ecstatic and cathartic moments of improvised energy. This music is born out of a deep appreciation of the natural world and a life lived amongst the elements. Visceral and virtuosic, Embrace is an album that captures two musicians completely comfortable in each other’s sonic company, welded together by a mutual desire to spread a sense of release and empowerment.

This November, Konrad Park returns to the trio format with an exciting lineup comprising pianist Dan Sulzburger, bassist Seb Folvig, and Konrad himself on drums. Built on the strength of last year’s trio venture, ‘Los Trios Bastardos’, Konrad Park dives into new territory as the Trio rediscovers the repertoire of Chick Corea and Emmett Cohen, among others. 

Dan Sulzburger has long been a strong voice in Hobart’s jazz community, able to bring to life any form of jazz, with his tasteful, passionate, and authoritative playing.

Hypnotic Celtic music with driving rhythms and soaring melodies

Half Light

Rennie Pearson and Bob McNeill

Half Light take a mixture of original and traditional folk tunes and songs and arrange them in new and exciting ways, drawing inspiration from both old and modern musical styles to weave a tapestry of rhythms, melodies and songs that will transport the listener to faraway lands at one moment and have their toes tapping and hands clapping at another.

Soaring flute and whistles, sonorous guitars, great songs and thumping rhythms take the music to unusual places.  Two virtuoso players with a new slant on live folk music, full of dark energy; but at the heart of their show is the “lift” – Celtic music at full tilt. These two are among the best there are and they create an intricately crafted and varied evening of music that is sure to bring the celtic blood deep within your veins to the boil.

Both Rennie and Bob are heavily involved in the folk music scene in New Zealand and Australia, both having extensive experience touring as solo acts and as part of various groups. They are both leading experts on their respective instruments and have taught and performed together various times at NZ’s Irish music school ‘Ceol Aneas’ as well as other festivals and workshops. The music they play delves deep into their musical creativity, with Bob’s intricate and evocative song writing and Rennie’s wide array of sounds and styles on the wooden flute and other instruments. The show will feature wooden flutes, Irish tin whistles, both steel string and Spanish guitars with various pedal sounds, fiddle and voices. This will be a fascinating and fresh approach to traditional folk music that is sure to delight the ears of listeners of all ages.

We welcome you to join us for the first iteration of Innerest. A semi-regular showcase of experimental, electronic and ambient artists, local and otherwise. Presented by long-running Australian cassette and record label, Altered States Tapes.

Warm Currency (Eora + Naarm / Sydney + Melbourne)



Warm Currency is the duo of MP Hopkins and Mary MacDougall. Both prolific visual artists, WC can be seen as something of an extension of their visual practices, the sound-sculptures crafted by Hopkins and MacDougall holding a delicate physicality. Warm Currency are one of Australia’s modern experimental treasures, having played semi-regularly around Australia (including supporting HTRK a number of times) over the last couple of years and touring the UK/Europe in 2022: https://horn-of-plenty.org/album/returns

Troth (nipaluna / Hobart)

Troth are the recently transplanted, nipaluna-living duo of Amelia Besseny and Cooper Bowman. Together they have made several albums and tapes, conjuring elements from ambient, DIY synth-pop, folk and experimental traditions. Bluetung (Naarm / Melbourne)



Bluetung is the solo project of Naarm-based Mitch Reynolds. Recent release, Eternity By The Stars, encompasses the variety of approaches Reynolds has honed over several albums: swells of kraut-adjacent guitars, modular drones and nods to avant-folk approaches culminating in a strong new voice in the Australian experimental/electronic ecosystem. https://bluetung.bandcamp.com/album/eternity-by-the-stars
