FREE EVENT. Saturday 31 March 2012, Salamanca Markets, 9:00am start, 2:00pm finish. 7:00pm judging as part of Space Invaders.
Combining GPS drawing, public art and cycling, The Tour De Haslem is a leisure cycling event to be run on Saturday 31 March 2012 as part of the Salamanca Arts Centre’s Big Weekend.
The event is an homage to Brian Haslem, the first administrator of the Salamanca Arts Centre, who conducted the business of the arts centre by riding his bike to local pay phones. When the queue outside got too long and people banged on the door, he would cycle to the next one and carry on.
Participating riders will be supplied with a phone card and a map of Hobart detailing the location of all its public phones. Using the map, they will plan a route between phones that creates a line drawing on the city. Then, with a smartphone with GPS tracking software, the riders cycle to create a drawing in real time, phoning the Salamanca Arts Centre from each pay phone they visit.
Drawings will printed and judged by Brian Haslem himself as part of Space Invaders on Saturday night. Prizes will be awarded across several categories, including a people choice.
