An exhibition of pottery and decorative arts by Alex and Marion Ceramics.
Presented by Salamanca Arts Centre.
Relics is an exhibition of pottery and decorative arts by Alex and Marion Ceramics featuring sculptural artworks and homewares available for purchase during the exhibition.
Alex and Marion work to combine the tactile appeal of East Asian folk pottery with studio-scale production techniques and designs that draw influence from past masters of the studio crafts (mainly 17th and early 18th century Japanese and European) and by the weedy flora of this temperate suburban environment. They are particularly proud of their glazes, which are the product of a unique and practical education followed by years of gruelling science, trial and error.
Alex and Marion use clays from Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. Most of their work is slip cast porcelain (formed in plaster moulds). They fire their work to a temperature of 1305 degrees Celsius (or Orton cone number 10) in a kiln that runs on salvaged vegetable oil from commercial deep fryers. Some work is fired in a reducing atmosphere and some work is fired in an oxidising atmosphere. Most of the glazes are felspathic.
Alex and Marion’s sculptural artworks explore the iconography and relic worship of Christian medieval Europe from the perspective of a 17th century Shinto Buddhist craftsman.
