Magic Carpet Ride is a collaboration of 6 multi-instrumentalists creating a musical vehicle to take you onto a wondrous journey. Sitar, harp, Indian violin, flute, vocals, bass and tabla are all tools used to build this fantastic, Magic Carpet. It will be exhilarating, scary, funny, surprising, enchanting or bumpy and just when you think you know what’s next – everything changes. However a smooth landing is promised.
What makes this presentation stand out is the concept which requires performers to ‘rotate’ on and off, adding their contribution and making space again for another collaborator. While the music continues, they hop on and off ‘the carpet’ creating random combinations of instruments.. This results in two continuous brackets of 45 min which moves through various genres and styles.
A screen behind the musicians will show videos digitally created by Ryan Curtis. They will emulate the view from a low flying Magic Carpet.
The musicians are Roman Astra (Sitar, Indian violin, vocals), Nik Stolp (6-string bass), Lynne Griffiths (flute, harp, harmonium), Helen Morrison (harp, cello) Ben Brinkhoff (fretless bass), and Santhanam Gopala (south Indian percussion).
Astra likes to combine musical performances with themes or theatrical elements. So some tongue in cheek humor can be expected.
